October already

I have a busy week behind me and haven’t really had much time to read the blogs of my blog friends. Please excuse me. Since I am back to work fulltime I am having a hard time managing blogging, but I haven’t forgotten as you can see.

The downpour of steady rain we have had until Friday in Bavaria didn’t help my mood much. I am one who likes the sun, cannot stand the cold and rain for a long time. It really depresses me when the days are getting shorter and temperatures are dropping. Friday afternoon the sun finally took over and it helped my spirits a lot. I am really dreading the long days of winter and I am hoping for very little snow again.

Last week I went shopping one day to a garden center I like very much. I have had a gift coupon for a while which I intended to spend. When I got there I looked around the craft section they have, but ended up in the gardening section after a while. I splurged and bought 2 roses Leonardo Da Vinci, 2 roses Bonica 82, 2 geranium Johnson blue, and two shrubs Amelanchier Laevis & Cornus Alba Sibirica, Crocus Vanguard (purple & white color) and white Allium.

The warmer weather on the weekend was a welcome change to extend another flowerbed and plant everything. Since I still have a bunch of room in there for perennials, I think I will try larkspur one last time. If it disappears there as well, this will be my last try with larkspur since I have only one surviving in the back.

Nevertheless, coming home today I took the time to take some nice shots with my Nikon, a Macro lens (AF Micro Nikkor 60 mm) before it got really dark. There is still a lot in bloom, though some of the fall flowers like Rudbeckia are in their very last stages. Even those perishing flowers are still beautiful in their own right.

September Colors Without Words

Busy Saturday

We’ve had two huge pallets of limestone sitting in the driveway for about three weeks. Due to the weather and another remodeling project we’ve been unable to start working on framing the flowerbed near the patio. Today was the day, though.

Wir hatten seit ca. 3 Wochen 2 Palletten mit Kalkstein in der Einfahrt sitzen. Auf Grund des Wetters und einem anderen Projekt kamen wir jedoch nicht dazu, das Terrassenbeet einzurahmen. Heute war’s endlich soweit.

Of course, Stella had to observe it all. She’s been wondering about the chaos we’d been creating inside the house and now outside as well.

Natürlich musste Stella alles ganz genau beobachten. Sie hat sich über das Chaos gewundert, das wir in der letzten Zeit im Haus und nun ausserhalb geschaffen haben.

We’ve used about 1,050 l of new planting dirt. As you can see here the perennials, hostas were removed now./ Wir brauchten ca. 1.050 l neue Pflanzerde. Stauden und Hostas waren jetzt auch nicht mehr im Beet.

Then I planted spring bulbs like tulips, alliums and daffodils, also new perennials and some of the old ones which I have had to divide since they had really grown these past two years. It started getting dark by now. Out of two hostas I made four and put them in pots since the slugs got to them pretty bad this year.

Dann pflanzte ich zuerst die Zwiebeln (Tulpen, Alliümmer und Narzissen), neue Stauden und einige der alten, die ich teilen musste, da sie in den letzten 2 Jahren so groß geworden waren. Aus zwei Hostas wurden vier. Allerdings sind jetzt in Töpfen, da die Nacktschnecken sie dieses Jahr böse misshandelt hatten. Es wurde jetzt auch schon dunkel.

This part will be done on Sunday since I was /we were really beat after all the work.
Dieser Teil wird morgen fertig gemacht, da wir für heute k.o. waren.

All in all I believe we’ve done a pretty good job on it and I am so looking forward to spring seeing the tulips, Alliums and daffodils bloom.

Ich denke, wir haben das alles recht gut gemacht und ich freu mich auf den Frühling und die Tulpen, Alliümmer und Narzissen, die dort blühen werden.

Sunday Follow-Up / Das Wort am Sonntag
I worked most of the morning and afternoon on the front part leading from the patio. We dug out the Graham Thomas and moved it. Then I removed everything else. Bulbs were planted here as well for spring – but in brighter colors than the other part. This bed will be mainly in yellow/white, except for the lavender which I like to have there for the rose.

Fast den gesamten Morgen und einen Teil des Nachmittags hab ich am vorderen Teil des Beets gearbeitet. Die Graham Thomas wurde umgesetzt. Zwiebeln wurden gesetzt – aber in fröhlicheren Farben als im dezenten seitlichen Teil des Beets. Dieser Teil wird hauptsächlich in weiss/gelb sein, ausser einem Lavendel, den ich wegen der Rose immer pflanze.

In Autumn / Im Herbst

Fall is arriving

Though I don’t really want to it to be here yet, all the signs are telling me it is right around the corner like early morning mists, cooler temperatures …

My garden shows a lot of yellow which I specifically like to be around in fall. Just like in spring I like the garden year to finish with bright and lively colors. Soon enough winter will be around the corner and the dry leftovers of the perennials will be covered with frost and everything resting waiting for spring to arrive.

Does that sound depressing? It is not meant to be. Except for winter I really like all seasons. So far I am lucky and many late summer flowers are still around.

Auch wenn ich nicht möchte, dass der Herbst schon jetzt kommt, so gibt es doch alle möglichen Anzeichen dafür – der Nebel über dem Gras frühmorgens, kühlere Temperaturen.

Mein Garten zeigt jetzt viel Gelb, das ich wegen des Herbsts gepflanzt hab. Ich mag es nämlich, wenn mein Garten das Gartenjahr mit fröhlichen Farben beendet. Bald ist nämlich der Winter wieder hier und der Frost setzt sich auf die Reste der Stauden während alles wieder darauf wartet im Frühling geweckt zu werden.

Klingt das deprimierend? Das soll es nicht. Bis auf Winter mag ich eigentlich alle Jahreszeiten. Bis jetzt habe ich noch das Glück, dass viele Spätsommerblumen noch blühen.
